If you’ve just realized that the transmission to your vehicle has failed, you may feel like you don’t have many options. Your car may not reverse, go forward, or even shift. You likely think your options are to replace the transmission, choose to repair it, or purchase a rebuilt transmission. While those are options, they are not the only ones available. We’ll go into the possibilities below.

Get Rid of the Car

This is an option that mainly pertains to vehicles that are over 20 years old and have nearly 300k miles on them. In this case, repairing or replacing the transmission is probably going to be more expensive than the value of the car. This can be true in some cases for newer cars, as well, depending on the vehicle’s value.

Sell the Car

You can get a small amount at a dealership for a car with a failed transmission, but it won’t be much. You can also try to sell the car on a site like Craigslist. Dealers, repair shops, and junkyards may be looking to buy damaged cars to repair them or use them for parts.

Purchased Used Transmission

Many online car stores and local junkyards will sell you used transmissions which can be shipped to your repair shop of choice. This can be affordable, but it does have risks. There often are no warranties on the used transmissions. That means if something else goes wrong, you have to start this process over again and spend even more money.

Remanufactured Transmission

When you take your car in to the dealership, they can often install a remanufactured transmission direct from the manufacturer. The problem here is that this can be an expensive option. The transmission itself could be nearly $3,000 and labor will add on to the price.

Rebuilt Transmission

Having the transmission rebuilt is a popular option for many drivers. A repair shop will take out the transmission, take it apart, clean each of the components, replace any worn out parts, put it back together, and finally place it back in the car. The cost for this can vary depending on the extent of the problem. However, you often get a warranty for the work which can be great for peace of mind for a few years after.
