Your home is small, but that doesn’t bother you. Maybe you live in an apartment or share a house with several friends. Either way, your personal space is just right for you…until you want to entertain, that is. Suddenly, your “just right” space is not quite enough. What can you do? First of all, do not go into a panic and start looking for a new home. Keep calm, and use one of the following tricks to make modern coffee tables work to solve your lack-of-space issues.

Define a Boundary

When you are already living the tiny life, adding another piece of furniture sounds like a bad idea, and it might be. The key is to choose the right piece of furniture and to place it where it will do the best. A coffee table is an excellent option when you can only add one more thing to your apartment, and it has to multitask. One of the table’s (not so secret) superpowers is that it effortlessly creates boundaries and defines conversation areas. Its second-best feature is that it comes in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit every situation. The traditional home for this type of table is, of course, directly in front of the couch, but even if you do not own a couch, you can create the illusion of a living room area by placing chairs near the coffee table where a sofa would otherwise be. Instant room separation, no walls required.

Create Hidden Usable Space

Modern coffee tables are full of all kinds of surprises. Some have a lid that you can lift up and lock into place, creating a standard-height table that easily stows away when you are done with it. This lid-raising feature also means that the inside of the table is a perfect storage compartment. When you live small, you have to be tidy. Storage containers that masquerade as tables and hide away the evidence of daily life are your friends.

Display Art or Other Collections

In a small home, especially in a one-bedroom or studio apartment, wall space tends to be minimal. If you have artwork or small collections that you want to display but don’t have room for, look for modern coffee tables that have a recessed area under a glass top. Yes, glass is heavy and not always easy to keep clean, but this design gives you a place to show off some of the things you care about, without taking up more space in your house. Win!

Modern coffee tables come in all heights, widths, shapes and materials. You are sure to find the right one for your home if you look around. Remember that modern coffee tables can be found online, both new and as vintage pieces.
