There is a lot of confusion in the general public about many of the new labels as well as the new products on the market. This is compounded when both issues are found in one product, as with certified organic quinoa.

Before determining the specific definition, or what goes into a product which can be labeled certified organic quinoa, it is important to start with the basics. This means learning a bit about quinoa itself, which is not a new but a very ancient grain.

What is Quinoa?

Quinoa is found both in a wild state as well grown as an agricultural crop. Like all grains, it is the seeds which are consumed, and it is closely related to amaranth, another ancient grain.

Quinoa is different than wheat, oats, and other grains in many different ways. It is highly drought tolerant, which makes it an excellent native plant and crop in areas of South America, specifically in the Andes in Peru. It is now grown in a wider area and in parts of Europe as well as in at higher elevations in California. This is a cultivar of the Peruvian variety which has a shorter growing season for the more northerly climate.

Quinoa and specifically Certified Organic Quinoa is sought after because it is naturally gluten free and has a nutty, rich flavor which makes it an excellent grain for cooking.

What is Certified Organic?

The next step in unraveling the specifics behind the term certified organic quinoa is to understand the meaning behind certified organic. This is a certification designated by the United States Department of Agriculture which specifies a particular item grown without the use of chemicals of any kind.

To be called certified organic quinoa, the crop must be planted on soil without any chemical treatment for three years. This includes synthetic or man-made fertilizers and type or chemical soil treatment or pesticides. In addition, the crop itself cannot be treated with herbicides or pesticides at any time prior to harvest.

Certified organic quinoa may contain some percentage of non-organic material, however, true organic producers only use 100% organic source quinoa or other grains or products. It is important to read the label carefully and look for the terms NON-GMO which indicates there are no genetically modified grains used in the product.

Choosing certified organic quinoa is a very healthy choice. Free from any residual chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers this is a wonderful grain to add to your diet.
