A conveying system is the nerve center of modern production lines. It helps move items between functional areas in a manufacturing or processing facility. The proper equipment can enhance operational efficiency and make a business competitive. Here are four factors to consider when choosing conveying equipment.

Product Specifications

First, consider your product’s weight, dimensions, and fragility. Item dimensions will determine the conveyor width and roller centers, while the weight will impact the roller diameter, gauge, and motor sizing. Product attributes will ultimately determine how they’re conveyed.

Process Requirements

It’s crucial to also consider how the conveyor should move and the conditions of its operating environment. Specifically, you want to pay attention to the following:

  • Product orientation and/or positioning for easy scanning or transfer
  • Transfer speed and available space
  • Distance products need to cover between functional areas
  • Elevations, curves, or diversions along the product pathway

Flow Rate

Your conveying equipment should also be capable of handling your facility’s daily transfer rate, including periods of peak demand. The volume of items you need to move per hour will ultimately affect the conveyor’s length and speed. If you’re transferring boxes or wooden pallets, you’ll want to get a conveyor with a chain-driven roller.

Transfer Requirements

Lastly, it’s vital to consider the point where items are transported from the conveyor. Most equipment uses either powered transfers or side-to-side transfers to facilitate this. If you have small-sized products, powered transfers are an excellent option. However, if your items are bulky or longer, you’ll want to consider gravity rollers.
