Being a commercial driver is a great occupation for any man or woman to have. Drivers are provided with plenty of benefits, job security and a chance to explore the open roads. However, to reach this level, drivers must first go through a strenuous process to receive a CDL License in Illinois. Below are some of the basics for receiving a CDL license certification.
Knowing The Different Classes
There are different classes of the different vehicles that a driver will operate. For instance, a standard Class C license will allow a driver to operate modest vehicles, such as small vans and trucks. However, for those looking to operate larger vehicles you’ll need either a Class A or Class B license.
A Class A license allows drivers to operate larger vehicles, such as tractor trailers. A Class B license permits drivers to operate vehicles, such as buses and trucks, that weigh over 26,000 pounds. Understanding Endorsements And Restrictions
A basic CDL license may be able to get a driver started, but a basic license will have a number of restrictions. For instance, a Class B license may allow a driver to operate a bus, but that same license may not allow a driver to operate a bus with passengers inside. To carry passengers, a driver will need to take a specialized skills and knowledge test.
There are also additional tests required for those who’d like to operate vehicles which transport hazardous materials. To transport hazardous materials a TSA Threat Assessment and knowledge test will need to be taken and passed. Without these endorsements, a driver may have a limited number of jobs that they’re qualified to complete.
