In order to get the most out of an area rug or a floor cloth, you must learn how to incorporate it into your home like a pro. These alignment, sizing, and spacing strategies can help you get started.

Furniture Alignment Tactics

If an area rug or floor cloth is large and wide, it should always extend underneath the furniture. This design strategy makes the layout on a floor stand out. If you’re unable to place your furniture’s front legs and back legs on a rug, position its front legs on the rug and the back legs on the tile, wood, or carpet. Only use this strategic decorating tactic for large furniture, such as a couch. It’s best to keep all four legs of smaller furniture pieces directly on a rug.

Size Considerations

When you’re picking a rug, select the biggest product that suits your budget as this strategy will help you save money in the long run. Although smaller rugs are cheaper, they’re harder to incorporate in a home’s design scheme. If you go big from the start, you won’t have to waste money on a bigger rug following a major renovation or redesign.

Space Strategies

You must strategically measure the space that’s available around all of your rugs. Typically, in a large room, there should be eight to 24 inches of space around each rug, and there should be 18 inches of space around all rugs in the most common areas in a home.

The goal is to place every rug directly in the center of a space. This rule doesn’t apply to halls.
