There is considerable debate between those involved in the kitchen renovation business about the pros and cons of granite countertops and engineered quartz countertops. Let’s take a few minutes to look a little deeper into what the arguments are.

The origin of the materials:

Quartz countertops are not cut from a solid slab of stone, they are considered to be an “engineered” stone consisting of about 93 percent ground quartz and 7 percent resin binder. The beauty of tops from Kent WA is the fact that they are produced in a wide variety of different patterns and colors; this is not the case with granite.

Granite is a natural stone which consists of quartz, mica and feldspar, it is hewn from the earth in huge blocks which are then cut into slabs which are polished and finally employed as a countertop in the home.

Pros of quartz and granite countertops:

Countertops from Kent WA have numerous advantages. Perhaps the most important advantage for the busy “chefs” in the house is the fact that quartz is non-porous which simply means spills are not a problem, they wipe up without any trace of the spill ever happening. Quartz countertops are also resistant to heat and scratches, if a hot pot is placed on the surface there will be no damage. Quartz countertops are also consistent in color and pattern.

Granite is heat and scratch resistant but being a porous material it requires periodic sealing otherwise liquids will mar the surface.

Cons of quartz and granite countertops:

There are few disadvantages associated with quartz countertops and these are minimal. The material is subject to discoloration over time especially when exposed to direct sunlight. If the kitchen layout is such that one part of the counter is exposed to the sun and the rest of the top is not there is the possibility of color change over time. The seams will be visible but less so if the countertop is of a darker color.

Granite countertops do not have a uniform appearance, many, but not all homeowners may see this as a disadvantage. Because granite is porous there is a need to seal the surfaces every year, this is not the case with engineered quartz tops. Although granite is very durable, it is by no means indestructible; if the edge is impacted it is quite easy for it to chip. As is true with quartz, the seams in granite cannot be hidden; the transition between sections is far more noticeable as granite is not uniform in appearance.

The consensus of opinion favors Kent Wa quartz countertops; they require little in the way of upkeep, are available in a host of decorator colors and they are resistant to heat and scratches which are common in all kitchens.
