As young children, we all aspire to grow up and become something fabulous. We have grandiose dreams of becoming fire fighters, police officers, doctors, actors, musicians and a number of other specialties that would not only make us happy, but successful, as well. If you ever dreamed of becoming a veterinary doctor, the chances of making that happen are pretty good. While it is not an easy path to embark on, there are just a few small hurdles you must overcome to fulfill your dream of caring for animals.
Complete a Bachelor Degree Program
If your goal is to become a veterinarian, this is the first place you would start. A veterinary doctor is required to have a doctorate degree – meaning, you must obtain a Bachelor’s degree to establish the educational platform needed to reach this level. Most veterinary programs require this; and if they don’t, they highly recommend it. While in most cases it doesn’t matter what your undergraduate degree is in, most applicants pursue courses rooted in science and biology.
Earn Your Doctorate
Once you have successfully established the undergraduate framework needed to pursue your doctorate degree, you can enroll in a doctorate program. There are many renowned programs throughout the United States – most of them boasting a robust curriculum that continuously builds upon itself year by year. The first two years, traditionally, are focused on science-related subjects. The last few years of the program may include clinical studies and practicums, where you actually get to apply your knowledge and work with animals, directly.
Get Licensed
Once you have successfully completed all of the required coursework, you can apply for licensure. Since Chicago veterinarians diagnose, prescribe different medications, perform surgical operations and practice preventative health care, it is critical that they are fully licensed. Each state requires that practicing veterinarians be licensed through the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. While this exam is recognized nationally, different states may have other state mandated requirements that applicants must oblige by.
Gain Working Experience
Once you are fully licensed, you are able to start practicing veterinary medicine. Most Chicago veterinarians align themselves with an existing animal hospital, clinic or start their own practice. Whatever you decide to do, this is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field. Once you have started working and dabbling in different areas of the industry, you can also decide upon a specialty. Chicago veterinarians work with a wide range of animals – from smaller animals to farm animals and wild life.
