There are many different options for Minnesota OEMs and businesses requiring custom metal replacement parts or components to use when cutting the part. Choosing the ideal method for single component production, prototyping, or full production of parts should be based on the type of metal or alloy, the degree of complexity of the shape, as well as the need for high degrees of tolerance.
One of the options for developing parts and components that meet all of the factors mentioned above is the use of wire EDM services. Wire EDM or electrical discharge machining, is an advanced option that is a top choice with hard metals and alloys that are difficult to accurately cut and shape using other types of machining methods.
The Basics
As with any type of machining service, choosing wire EDM services that are experienced and have the ability to work to the tolerances and requirements of the customer is always an advantage.
The wire EDM process does not require any direct contact with the wire and the workpiece. Instead, the wire is used to create the electrical discharge path to cut the shape. With no pressure on the metal, there is no distortion of the surface and no requirement for heating of the metal outside of the cutting path.
In addition, the dielectric liquid used during the cutting process flushes away any debris produced by the instant cutting through of the workpiece, eliminating even minor deviations from very tight tolerances.
The more specific the cut needs to be, the greater the benefit of using wire EDM services. This is also the ideal option with very small sizes of precision part production required by Minnesota OEMs.
