When it comes to one of the most common materials used in the lifting and rigging industry as well as in architectural uses there are many things that most people don’t know even if they have been working in the industry for many years. The same material as wire rope used in CT is an invention which changed the face of modern architecture. Such an impactful invention is definitely worth learning about some of the history regarding its use in both architecture and the lifting industry.
Wire Rope like that used in CT is a relatively recent invention. Though it was technically first invented in the 1600’s there was little innovation until around 1849 to 1889 when the United States began to popularize the use of this rope in the modern sense of how it is used. It was used mainly in the mining and lifting industries in the United States while in England a man named Andrew Smith was trying to make ship riggings out of the material which he felt could be promising for the industry.
In the process of improving upon the innovating around the wire rope which would be used in CT Robert Neval developed a wire rope which was produced by machines. It had six separate strands with each of them containing their own core. This patented process would then become the widespread standard for the industry and become widely used throughout many different industries including shipping, mining, lifting, and rigging. The rope was then moved into the train industry by John Roebling who was a surveyor. He found that by creating a process for twisting 19 wires together into a hexagonal shape he would be able to use the rope to pull trains up steep inclines.
With the new inventions in the field he was able to make the rope usable in a much wider group of industries. One of the final results of his innovation for wire ropes was their use in the Brooklyn Bridge. Wire rope in CT would be used for many different purposes including architecture a lifting in order to accomplish many of the daily feats that the industry now relies on in order to be productive and help create progress in the modern age.
